Sabre men's lacrosse drops spring trip opener 20-5 to Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. - Marian University men's lacrosse (3-2, 1-1 MLC) opened their spring trip with a loss to Whittier by a 20-5 final.

The Poets opened the game strong holding the Sabres scoreless after one-quarter of action while scoring eight times.  The duo of sophomores Garrett Houlihan and Connor Houlihan opened the scoring for the second quarter but a pair of Whittier goals set the halftime score at 10-2.

The Houlihan brothers did all of the scoring for the third quarter as well with Garrett scoring twice and Connor scoring once.  The Poets then once again posted a shutout holding Marian scoreless in the fourth quarter with four Whittier goals setting the final at 20-5.

The three-goal game from Garrett Houlihan led the offense, while sophomore Tommy Gerlach led the defense with a game-high seven ground balls to go with a pair of caused turnovers.

Freshman Johnny Estrada faced 39 shots on goal making 19 saves with four of his goals allowed coming while Whittier had a man-advantage.

Marian closes out their trip taking on Johnson & Wales from Whittier Friday, March 22 at 3 p.m.
