Marian men's lacrosse pulls away late to defeat CUC 19-10

RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Marian University men's lacrosse (6-2, 2-1 MLC) set a program record for wins in a single season defeating Concordia Chicago 19-10.

The Cougars were able to start fast in the game taking a 3-1 lead with 5:52 left in the first quarter.  Marian was then able to score three goals in the final 3:07 with sophomore Garrett Houlihan scoring twice and fellow sophomore Connor Houlihan scoring with a man-up.

The Sabre lead didn't last long as CUC was able to score the first three goals of the second quarter to take a 6-4 advantage.  Freshmen Finn Maloney and Patrick Langeluttig would each score to tie the game only to have Concordia Chicago take a 7-6 lead.  Marian then once again had a strong finish scoring four goals in a span of 1:43 to take a 10-7 lead into halftime.

Marian was able to score the first three goals out of halftime only to have CUC score a pair of goals in a span of 59 seconds to send the squads into the final quarter with MU ahead 13-9.  Concordia Chicago would score six seconds into the final quarter to cut their deficit down to three, but Marian was able to score six unanswered goals to close out the game and cruise to the win.

The Sabres finished with a 51-36 advantage in shots with the Sabre defense holding Concordia Chicago to only 15 shots on goal.  The Marian defense also went on to hold CUC to only three man-up goals on 12 opportunities.

Maloney led the offense scoring eight goals with two assists for a 10-point game, while freshman Colt Robertson also had a nine-point game scoring five goals with four assists.  In goal, freshman Johnny Estrada earned the victory making five saves.  Sophomore Tommy Gerlach paced the offense with nine ground balls, while fellow sophomore Devin Whitty had three caused turnovers.

Marian remains on the road to take on Cornell in a make-up MLC game Monday, April 1 at 5 p.m.
