WATERTOWN, Wis. - The Marian University men's volleyball (5-8, 3-2 NACC) offense was dominant as the Sabres defeated Maranatha Baptist with set scores of 25-22, 25-18, 21-25, and 25-16.
Marian opened strong with 12 kills to only one error in the opening set to take an early lead. After taking an early 9-6 lead, the Sabres went on a 9-4 run to take a commanding 18-10 advantage and cruise to the set win. The Marian offense cooled off slightly in the second set but still produced 11 kills, while the defense held the Sabercats to only seven kills and a .067 hitting percentage. The Sabres jumped out to an early 9-3 lead only to see Maranatha Baptist cut the deficit to 18-16. Marian then thwarted the rally closing out the set with a 7-2 spurt.
The Sabercats bounced back in the third holding Marian to a -.030 hitting percentage to force a fourth set, but Marian put together their best set of the match in the fourth to secure the win. Marian would record 19 kills with a .548 hitting percentage for the set and closed out the match with a 13-5 run.
Junior Jacob DeGroot led the offense with a team-high 12 kills to go with a .455 hitting percentage, while freshman Jacob Jurney added 11 kills with a .267 hitting percentage to go with three service aces. From the back row, senior Cullen Liberski had a match-high 17 digs.
Marian returns to NACC action traveling to Concordia Wisconsin for a 7 p.m. first serve Wednesday, February 27.
