MEQUON, Wis. - Marian University men's volleyball (6-8, 4-2 NACC) finished with a .366 hitting percentage and didn't' hit below .350 in a single set to sweep Concordia Wisconsin with set scores of 25-16, 26-24, and 25-17.
The match started tight with Marian taking a 15-13 lead in the opening set before the Sabres exploded for a 10-3 run that put the first set away. Concordia Wisconsin looked poised to even the sets leading 18-12 and eventually taking that lead out to 24-18. Marian then fought off all six set-point opportunities for the Falcons to tie the set at 24-24 and completed the rally with a kill from junior Jacob DeGroot and a block from senior Jon Smallpage.
It was another strong finish that propelled the Sabres to the sweep as Marian led in the third 17-16 before going on an 8-1 spurt to complete the sweep.
Marian had 16 kills in the third set and had their most efficient set come in the second hitting .375 with 14 kills to only two errors.
Smallpage had a match-high 14 kills and hit .500 for the match, while fellow senior Ben Walter had 10 kills and hit .438. From the back row, senior Cullen Liberski had a match-high eight digs with Walter adding seven digs.
At the net, the Sabres had eight blocks with DeGroot recording five block assists and a solo block to go with three service aces. Senior Joey Dittman had a strong match with 32 assists, five digs, and a pair of kills.
Marian will return home Wednesday, March 6 to take on MSOE for a 7 p.m. first serve in NACC action.
