RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Marian University men's volleyball (9-10, 7-4 NACC) opened a five-match road stretch falling to No. 15 Dominican 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, and 25-18.
Both offenses hit .464 in the opening set as the first set was settled by the minimum of two points. The largest lead for the set was a meager four points at 21-17 before Marian went on a 6-3 run to cut the deficit to 24-23. A Star timeout provided enough of a break as the Sabres had a service error out of the break to give Dominican the set.
The Marian offense kept on swinging in the second set as Marian had 16 kills to only two errors for a .467 hitting percentage while holding Dominican to a .200 hitting percentage. The largest lead of the set was only three as Marian took a 23-20 lead late. The Stars were able to cut their deficit down to one before back-to-back kills from senior Ben Walter and freshman Jacob Jurney tied the sets.
Dominican was able to expand on a 9-7 lead in the third set with an 8-4 run creating the largest lead of the match at 17-11. This lead proved to be too much for the Sabres to come back from. Dominican was then able to take the match closing out the fourth set with a 6-2 run.
Four Sabres finished in double-digits for kills led by Jurney who had a match-high 14 kills to go with a .444 hitting percentage. Junior Jacob DeGroot added 10 kills and hit .474 in the defeat. Senior Cullen Liberski had a match-high 18 digs from the back row, while senior Joey Dittman assisted on 45 of the 50 Marian kills.
