FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University softball (19-7, 7-3 NACC) pushed their win streak to four with a 5-2 and 6-2 victory over Lakeland from Smith Field.
The Muskies opened the game fast with a pair of RBI singles in the top of the first but the Marian offense answered consistently scoring a single run in five of the six innings they stepped to the plate.
The Sabres were able to take advantage of an error in the bottom of the opening frame that allowed freshman Ally Fox to score and Fox then tied the game in the second with a sacrifice fly that scored sophomore Olivia Hartley.
Hartley then gave Marian their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third when she sent a two-out pitch to right center for a double that scored senior Nicole LaBeck.
Lakeland would load the bases in the top of the fifth with one out but a diving play defensively from sophomore Rachel Soch cut down a runner at the plate and a lazy fly ball to right field ended the threat for the Muskies.
Senior Charlotte Pegram doubled in senior Sara Terrian in the fifth and freshman Gianna Esposito brought in Fox with a single in the sixth as the Sabres were able to pad their lead and earn the 5-2 win.
Senior Shannon Huray (10-5) settled down nicely after the first inning only allowing three hits in the final six innings of the ball game.
Fox led the offense for Marian in the game one win going 3-3 with two runs scored and a run batted in.
In game two, it was the Sabres who jumped out early with RBI singles from Esposito and Terrian that gave Marian a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
The Muskies cut into the lead off a play with runners on first and third in the second but the Sabres were able to extend their lead out in the bottom of the third.
Pegram and Hartley were the Sabres who drove in runs in the inning but the Muskies were once again able to answer in the next half inning cutting the lead in half at 4-2. Marian responded in the bottom half, however, as Terrian singled to center to drive home Fox and in the next inning Soch singled in Pegram as Marian took a 6-2 lead.
Lakeland would make things interesting in the top of the seventh loading the bases but no Muskies were able to cross the plate to set the final at 6-2.
Freshman Paige Rauhut (8-2) earned the complete game win working around 10 hits and only allowing two runs, one earned.
The duo of Esposito combined to go 5-9 with Terrian going 3-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored.
Marian next travels to Concordia Wisconsin for a noon doubleheader Saturday, April 15 in NACC action.
