MONTGOMERY, Ill. - Marian University softball (23-13, 15-7 NACC) earned the No. 4 seed for the upcoming NACC tournament defeating Aurora 5-3 before a 9-0 defeat in five innings.
The opener of the series was a thriller that went down to the wire with a late rally giving Marian the game. An RBI single from sophomore Peyton Loesch opened the scoring in the top of the first opened the scoring before Aurora answered in the bottom half with a run of their own. The Spartans then took their first lead of the day with a pair of runs in the fourth inning.
Marian responded in the next half inning, opening with an RBI single from freshman Andrea Meagher and an RBI double from junior Ally Fox. Junior Taylor Lauscher then gave Marian a 4-3 the lead with an RBI single to plate Fox. Sophomore Katy Croeker added some cushion in the sixth inning with a solo home run, her fourth of the season.
Sophomore Paige Rauhut (11-6) went 4.0 innings allowing three earned runs to earn the victory, while sophomore Myranda Schuttenhelm was able to toss the final 3.0 innings without allowing a hit to earn her second save of the season.
Offensively, Fox was dominant at the top of the lineup going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a run driven in. Loesch also went on to have a multi-hit game in the victory.
The Sabre offense struggled in game two of the twin bill only managing four hits, while Aurora would go on to have two big innings with five runs in the third and four in the fifth to earn a split.
In the series, Fox was also able to set a Marian softball single-season record for stolen bases with her 26th stolen base in game one and number 27 in game two.
Marian is scheduled to close out the regular season against UW-Oshkosh from Smith Field Tuesday, April 30 for a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
