LISLE, Ill. - Marian University women's lacrosse (1-2, 1-2 MWLC) earned their first program victory defeating Benedictine by a 15-11 score in MWLC action.
The Sabres took the first lead of the game and a 6-1 run in the middle of the first half saw the Sabres take an 8-3 lead with 5:42 left in the half. The Eagles battled back to cut the deficit to one with four goals in a span of 2:40 but a free position goal from freshman Bayli Mannek with 11 seconds in the half gave the Sabres a 9-7 edge heading into halftime.
Benedictine was able to cut the Marian lead down to one on a pair of occasions, but another 4-1 spurt in the middle of the second half would give Marian a 14-10 cushion with 12:54 left to play. The two squads would trade a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes with neither team scoring in the final 8:43 to seal the final at 15-11.
Marian finished with a 34-31 advantage in shots for the game with the defense holding Benedictine to 17-35 on clear attempts. The Sabres finished with 16 successful clears on just 20 attempts.
Senior Hailey Miller led the offense scoring six goals with three ground balls and four caused turnovers. Freshman Sally Moris had her third-consecutive multi-goal game with four goals and an assist for five points. Moris also led the Sabres with five ground balls, six draw controls, and five caused turnovers.
In goal, junior Molly Gross (1-2) made eight saves on 19 shots to earn the victory.
Marian is scheduled to host their inaugural home game Saturday, March 16 at 3 p.m. taking on Monmouth (Ill.) in MWLC action.
